Glasses

My vision has considerably decreased over the last two years because of my work, to the point where I can’t read anything written on the TV 6 meters away from me. I’m having my first visit to the ophthalmologist in two weeks.

A third of the French population has myopia: it’s increasingly common, most certainly because of our ever-expanding digital habits.

It doesn’t have to be that way, though. Eye care technologies and habits do exist, it’s just not as common to take care of your eyes as it is to brush your teeth: education is the problem. I mean, you probably heard your mom telling you not to stay so close to the TV screen, but have you ever heard of the 20-20-20 rule? I didn’t till a year ago.

Contact lenses look painful, so I’ll settle down with a pair of square glasses. Can’t wait to look more like a stereotypical computer guy. I don’t know if I’ll have to wear them at all times to correct my vision, or only while driving or staring at a sunset.

The Norse god Odin had to lose an eye to see beyond the physical realm. Similarly, I don’t mind if my quest for knowledge costs me a small handicap. Truth is among the few things worth living for, so a pair of glasses isn’t a bad trade.
