Just Think Of It As Training
I have a few guilty pleasures. Fighting movies, no matter how bad the story is, are one of them. I particularly enjoy revenge, redemption, and underdog narratives.
Undisputed 3 is one of those. And in these troubled times, I am reminded of a dialogue between the two main protagonists:
Turbo: [On their way to the quarry] This is some fucking bullshit. This is a fucking joke.
Uri Boyka: Maybe we can turn this around. We can turn it to our advantage.
Turbo: Improvise. Adapt. Overcome. How?
Uri Boyka: We can say this is work, or we can say this is training.
I’m more interested in training scenes than in actual fights, because they tell a lot more about the characters and their way of life. They even sometimes hold nuggets of wisdom. Boyka’s last sentence in the aforementioned quote is one of them: we can whine about the challenges thrown at us by life, or we can think of them as training for something bigger.
This is another way to look at Nietzsche’s overused quote, “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”
I like to think of life as training. Not for an afterlife, but for the sake of seeing my mind expand and blossom.
I am grateful for all the hardships I encountered on my road, for I wouldn’t be myself without them.
A life without sadness is without joy. Great triumphs come from great challenges. Everything is to be embraced in its entirety.
