On Bathing

I feel like bathing is similar to walking: it allows for the practice of solitude.

There is something about floating in a body of water surrounded by small waves. It’s just enough movement to keep the senses awake, but it never fails to ease and stimulate my mind at the same time.

If all of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone, I find bathtubs quite easy to deal with in comparison.

Hydrotherapy has been around for thousands of years, but it isn’t as common as it used to be. Ice baths and cold showers are trendy topics, but it’s only a small part of the art of bathing.

Of course, bathtub thinking isn’t as easy and accessible as taking a walk. There are countries where it’s part of the culture and public baths are commonplace, but it’s not sustainable on a daily basis because of the amount of water bathing requires (if you do not have access to a lake/river/sea/ocean nearby).

It can however give you a little boost from time to time, after a particularly exhausting day at work or during stressful periods.
